Video of Naomi Klein on the Colbert Report

-In this video, Stephan Colbert pretends to defend making money off disasters. Despite his jokes, Klein gets her argument across. Notice the connection she makes to Hurricane Katrina. How do you think this argument relates to our overall course theme of America's place in the world?

-Before answering the question, I would like to say Naomi Klein is freakin' cute...I was expecting to see some old lady. And she must have a lot of guts to expose the American government's corruption.

-That's what America actually do, they indirectly put people in shock, so they can get whatever they want from off the people. The American government sees that whenever people look unto them in the time of trouble, they have a chance to prove their authority, and take advantage to enrich themselves. This is an act of selfishness, and that's how America's place in the world is today. Every international affairs America involves itself with is for her selfish reasons.

  1. Adams - Think more specifically about what you're saying here - who is acting selfishly? How exactly do they go about enriching themselves?

It would be interesting for you to think about why you made the assumption about her looks and age that you did. It's fine to be more casual on the blogs but we want to keep our focus on people's ideas.

  2. I don't think it is appropriate to state that America is precieved as selfish by all other countries. That is just another sterotype. Remember Obama's quote?

  3. Well, that it's *perceived* as selfish is certainly true. The question is, is this perception based on actual experiences or is it based on a stereotype, as Roshanara and Obama are claiming? How would you go about supporting either position?

  4. I think america is selfish and self centered...yeah obama made a good point but he's just trying to defend america. Obama was trying to saythat we doon't always focus on ourselves we also try and help other countries in need..but do these other countries ever ask for help? No, america just believes they know what is right and how people need to be living. and even then when they ever invaded a country they always want something out of it. So tech. america isnt really helping out of good, they do it becuase they want something and i call that being selfish. If the american government can deceive and fool its own people what makes you think they think differently about others in diff countries....

  5. Interesting: Amanda, do you think that there is a kind of aid/intervention that the U.S. could make that would be beneficial to other countries? Or do you think it would be better if the U.S. played less of a role in the world?

  6. (At prof. Tanenbaum) What the American govt. does is to either put countries in shock, or wait till their in shock (shock in terms of difficult situations), then they invade those countries, pretending to be "helping", and take whatever they want.
I would use Iraq for a good example. When the U.S govt. got Saddam, is it that they didn't withdraw their troops from Iraq? They wanted more than just Saddam Hussein, they wanted Iraq's oil.

  7. cute??? haha

Well, I totally agree, with the idea that the United States is a selfish country. Everything that they have done and continue to do is with only one purpose, to enrich themselves.

Roushanara, how is the U.S not selfish???

  8. Adams your right, America is selfish in way too many ways. America is focused on its satisfaction, no matter the measures that have to be taken...America gets what America really wants.

  9. The American government KNOWS what they're doing isn't right, but as long as the citizens of this country continue to believe such nonsense then theres nothing stopping this bully. This country's reputation has only been good in the eyes of it's own citizens...and hopefully public opinion will change with the help of people like Klein.

  10. LOL AT THE COMMENT ABOUT HER LOOKS....I ALSO THOUGHT THAT SHE WOULD BE ALOT OLDER...

    - I AGREE WITH ALL OF YOU, I ALSO BELIEVE THAT THE GOVERNTMENT IF SELFISH. BUT HOW IS IT THAT THEY CAME TO BECOME SO POWERFUL? WHO MADE THE US THE "BIG BOSS". IS IT BECAUSE THEY DO SO MUCH AND OTHER COUNTRIES HAVE VIEWD THEM AS A "PROTECTOR" IN A WAY THAT IF THERE IS EVER ANY PROBLEM THE HOPEFULLY THE U.S CAN HELP BAIL THEM OUT....IS IT BECAUSE OTHER COUNTRIES ARE SCARED THAT THE U.S CAN ONE DAY TAKE THEM OVER.

  11. Great comments. Some thoughts and more questions:

    1) In repsonse to Tracy's point, what has what you've been studying in Prof. Miller's class revealed about how the U.S. got to be so powerful?

    2) In response to the comments about the U.S. being motivated by wealth and oil: which of our readings agree with this? Which might suggest there's another motivation for U.S. power?

    3) Adams, wars are a big part of it: what *other* kinds of U.S. intervention around the world have we seen examples of?

  12. I have to agree with Adams 100% that Klein is hot, has a great smile too ;)

I think people that live in America just like to bash America simply because they can!

  13. Undeadmedic, is someone here 'bashing America'? Or are we making arguments about its role in the world? If you disagree, show what's wrong with the argument; don't just react against it.

  14. (At porf. T) Life and Debt, they tried to rule over Jamaica economically, by lending a huge some of money to them ( it seems the U.S is trying to help Jamaica), but the U.S govt. is fully aware that Jamaica cannot pay back the money, so in return, they do whatever they want with Jamaica.
